The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced plans to establish model secondary schools with top-tier boarding facilities in each of the state’s three senatorial districts.

Governor Pastor Umo Eno made this known on Saturday during the February 2025 edition of the Government House Monthly Covenant Service at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Uyo. He explained that the initiative would involve adopting and reconstructing existing secondary schools to serve as model boarding schools.

According to Eno, these schools will function as unity institutions for both the state and federal government. A dedicated delivery team will be set up to oversee the timely implementation of the project, along with a strong Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and a special committee to ensure efficient management.

Parents will be required to pay a specified feeding fee, with proof of payment serving as a prerequisite for students’ access to hostel accommodations. Admission into the schools will be strictly merit-based, with a transparent entrance examination conducted by an independent consultancy firm.

“We have several projects that must commence and be completed as we approach 2026. One key initiative that God has placed on my heart is to revive the concept of a traditional boarding school. We will select and redevelop three secondary schools—one in each senatorial district—ensuring they are well-equipped and fully operational,” the governor stated.

“All applicants will write a centrally coordinated exam, which will be marked by computer, ensuring that only the best students are admitted,” he added.

Governor Eno also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the long-abandoned International Conference Centre at the Tropicana Entertainment Centre in Uyo, which will be renamed the Ibom International Conference Centre (IICC). Additionally, the 14-storey Tropicana Hotels project will be completed within the same timeframe, aligning with efforts to boost the state’s tourism sector and ensure the completion of past government projects for public benefit.

Expressing his condolences over the untimely passing of the deputy governor’s daughter, Eno called on Christians to continue praying for the state’s leaders and government.

He also commended Pastor Imoh Ime Ekpenyong, a clergyman and entrepreneur from Nsit Ubium, for his self-funded initiatives in training villagers on soap and paint production, among other skills. Encouraging citizens to contribute positively to their communities rather than engaging in unproductive criticism, the governor appointed Ekpenyong as his Special Assistant on Entrepreneurial Development. He further directed that the cost of his past training programs be reimbursed and that he be provided with a vehicle to support his work.

In his sermon titled “Mountain Conquering Grace,” drawn from Zechariah 4:7, Bishop Mike Eduok of Life and Power Ministries encouraged believers to trust in God’s grace to overcome challenges. He also urged citizens to pray for the state’s leadership, asking for divine guidance in fulfilling their responsibilities.
